ABOUT

Partnerships

We work with communities and stakeholders for each cultural institutions. Our partners are the stewards/owners of the cultural infrastructure - (government, not-for-profits, trusts, chiefs, royals, private individuals); communities (geographic, of interest or otherwise); funders (government, international cultural agencies, foundations, philanthropists, individuals); researchers (universities, civil society, individuals); media (broadcasters, networks, content creators) and more.

We work with passionate individuals who are committed to trying new models, taking risks, experimenting, innovating, and collaborating.

Contemporary Artists, Designers and Makers

Our Makeovers are driven by communities, working with local and pan-African creatives - designers, artists, architects, scenographers, performers, writers, filmmakers, gamers, and more - who bring their imaginations and creative skills to re-imagining and re-viving existing infrastructure.

Group A/42

Our museums form a group of dynamic cultural spaces - each one unique but with a common commitment to quality, creativity, relevance and responsiveness to our young audiences. A/42 member museums share a common brand and positioning, booking systems and operational model. We travel exhibitions and shows within the group and share our skills and expertise.

360 degree +

Creative Repair Studio transforms AND operates museums. Once we have transformed the visitor experience we stick around to help make the renewed institutions a success through on-the-job training, ongoing support for visitor services, marketing and communication, and developing earned income opportunities. We share the risk and the reward - through signing long-term management services agreements with our group museums we ensure we are in it for the long haul.

Visitor-Centered

The visitor is at the center of what we do. We do ongoing extensive research to make sure we are always providing an exceptional experience to all of our visitors. Although open to everyone, we are specifically geared towards Millennials, Born Frees and Generation Zs - locals and tourists.

Innovative Funding Model

We bring together funders and investors who seek to make a long-term social impact, with cultural institutions with untapped potential in their collections, buildings and creative communities.

Together we embark on a journey of sustainable transformation designed specifically to attract and engage new generations.

Why Museums?

There are 1000s of small museums across Africa and 300 in South Africa alone. Most are in small towns and secondary cities. As institutions dedicated to the preservation of unique local, regional, national and international culture and heritage, they are protected under national and international law.  In a context with few permanent spaces and platforms for cultural expression, they are a valuable resource. Yet they are grossly underutilized and underfunded. We believe museums represent an incredible opportunity to utilize existing infrastructure to createa new type of sustainable African space - a generative platform for cross-disciplinary creativity, where heritage meets art, design, performance and more. Africa is experiencing the fastest population and urban growth in the world.  We are moving into or growing up in cities, detached from rural communities where much of our cultural heritage and traditions are preserved. These cities and towns have few accessible, permanent, public spaces where diverse, non-commercial arts and culture can be expressed and enjoyed - especially for and by young generations.
